Step 1: Gather Information

The first step in the process, and one of the most critical, is for the architect and owner to gather and analyze as much available existing information as possible pertaining to the site (i. e. condition of existing building, local zoning by-laws, conservation concerns). Initial documents we will want to have in place before proceeding include:

  • Site Survey

  • Photos

  • As-built drawings

  • Owner questionnaire

Step 2: Set Project Goals

At the outset of a project it is important to start with a thoughtful set of goals. Theses initial goals are intended to help prioritize the values of the owner as they pertain to a specific project. Keeping track of and periodically checking back to an original set of goals helps to ensure that the project will ultimately deliver the greatest value for the owner. A set of goals will also help to keep the project aimed in the right direction as the decisions and complexities within a project start to build. Some examples of project goals may include:

  • maximize natural light

  • improve flow

  • create a strong connection with landscape

  • employ passive heating and cooling

  • minimize time and money

Step 3: Explore Options

Another critical step in the design process at Silipo Architecture is the exploration of multiple design options. This step creates the opportunity to flesh out the best solution to a design opportunity and help an owner fully understand what a design decision will look and feel like early on in the design process. Multiple techniques including hand drawings, plans, perspectives, computer models, and 3D models are used to convey space, material, light, and texture.

Step 4: Create and Refine

In this step one or two of the options in the previous step are defined in greater detail. Construction documents and other tools are created and established in order to coordinate communication between Silipo Architecture, the general contractors, and sub-contractors. The more complete the set of documents, the better equipped an owner will be to protect his or her investment.

Step 5: Construct and Observe.

The architect can protect and create the most value for an owner during the last step in the process. The construction phase is when all the hard work and preparation of the design process comes to life. Observation of the construction process makes sure that what was drawn is what is being built.
